NEW CLASSES: Check out Tom Montag's two new classes.
Updated: Dec 14, 2020
Tom Montag is offering two new classes for The Mill's winter term beginning in January. Each class examines a different set of seven poets to discover what lessons we can absorb into our own poetry.
The first listed class is called Lessons Seven Poets Can Teach Us: First Series. The poets studied are James Wright, Jane Kenyon, Philip Levine, Sharon Olds, Ruth Stone, William Stafford, and Mary Oliver. Students will also write up to fourteen poems inspired by these poets and will share them with a small group of like-minded poets. The First Series class last fall received very favorable reviews. Julie Kramer, a participant in the class, said, "I took this class in the fall . . . and it was fantastic. It provided the opportunity to study a group of great poets, be taught by a skilled teacher, be held accountable for producing two poems a week, and get feedback from a group of talented, constructive classmates. A new session is starting January 19. I highly recommend it!" Mr. Montag has decided to offer the class again this winter. He's offering a similar class about a different set of seven poets, a Second Series class.
Lessons Seven Poets Can Teach Us: Second Series is that class. This set of poets includes Han-Shan, Charles Simic, Naomi Shihab Nye, Joy Harjo, Adrienne Rich, Wendell Berry, and Seamus Heaney. N.B.: The First Series is a prerequisite for this series, though you might be able to enroll in it with the instructor's consent.
Both classes will be conducted via Zoom. The instructor will email links to each participant before the class. Size limits for the two classes are from two (minimum) to six (maximum) students. The cost is $195 per class, which figures out to about $12 per hour of instruction time ($195 / 16 (8 sessions at 2 hrs. each) = $12.19). A bargain.
