"The Bear Came Over the Mountain"

Alice Munro, the author of "The Bear Came Over the Mountain," made a slight, but perhaps telling, change from the original title of the the children's song "The Bear Went Over the Mountain." Came to Went may have just been a lapse in memory on her part, or possibly she thought that had always been the title. Song lyrics are notorious for their variations. But what if she consciously, purposely, made the change from Went to Came? What then?

Well, perhaps, an answer to that will come in the Neenah Library's Short Story Night, to be held on Monday, November 9th, at 7:00 p.m. "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" is the topic of the evening's discussion. The Library's Short Story Night is now, since Covid-19, only a virtual event. Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUpdeGpqzwoH9yCajo_glzl7m-vFhVfmNPX. Join the fun and discussion.

The short story, by the way, was made into a film called Away From Her in 2006, starring Julie Chrisie (Fiona), Gordon Pinsent (Grant), Olympia Dukakis (Marian), and Michael Murphy (Aubrey). Sarah Polley wrote the screenplay, based on the Munro story, and directed.

The library event has also been added here.
